Woodpecker Video

This is a video of Jordan sneaking up on the woodpecker. It is worth the wait to see the woodpecker. You can also hear the noise we hear from morning until night. He started at 4:30 this morning. Does anybody know why he likes the ladder so much?

Also, Katie will be doing much of the blogging this summer.

Great video! Flickers spend a lot of time hammering on sheet metal on houses in the spring. It's thought the sound resonates farther that way in their search for a mate. Never seen one of the little WP doiing that though!

Woodpeckers do not sing to advertise for mates the way many songbirds do. The hammer out a tattoo, usually on some dead wood - something that reverberates well and carries the sound far. It's kinda like shouting out "Hey Ladies - here I am. I've got a great area here, come and check it out." This particular fella' (which incidentally is a Yellow-belied Sapsucker) seems to like the way the metal reverberates.

Thanks Pat and Christopher! Now I know we are not going to listen to this woodpecker all summer. I hope! Actually, today he was busy doing other things and left the ladder alone.
